This serves as a "reaction piece" for the events surrounding the Oscar Grant murder and trial.
As the story goes...
I was asked by longtime friend and collaborator, Scribe Sayar (
consafos.bandcamp.com) to contribute 8-bars to this project that would feature artists from up and down California. Although I'm not usually the overly-political type, I figured it would be good to give my honest reaction due to the fact my kids happened to watch the original broadcasts about the case and I had an interesting time explaining to them how a man can be killed "accidentally." After all, everything, including politics, starts at home.
I wasn't sure how the song was going to turn out since none of us were actually in the studio together. I emailed a .wav file of my verse to Scribe Sayar and I was impressed the studio engineers were able to place everything as well as they did.
My verse is as follows:
See, really, it's a shame because I need to think of a way to explain
to my babies that a man was "accidentally" slain.
Because they saw it on the TV but they didn't believe
there was anything "accidental" from officer Mehserle.
So don't worry about sticks and stones breaking your bones
when they're trying to break our spirits instead.
Call it "terrorism" and you might wind up dead...
Happy New Year as concrete turns red.
